Member Spotlight: Kenneth Spillman, K Spillman Jr Farmers Insurance Agency
Can you tell us a little about the history of your business?
Farmers Insurance started in the year of 1928 and is still going strong to this day. Farmers Insurance Group is an American insurer group of vehicles, homes and small businesses and also provides other insurance and financial services products. Farmers Insurance has more than 48,000 exclusive and independent agents and approximately 21,000 employees. I am 1 out of the 48,000 agents here to serve the great state of Texas, and am part of the fabric here in Katy Texas!
What inspired you to start this business and how has your vision evolved over time?
I started in the Insurance business back in 2018 as a claim adjuster and had and still have a heart for people and utilizing my skills and passion to serve others. I became a husband and a father in 2014 and at that point I realized the importance of family and protecting them at all costs! Four things guide me to be at my best in this industry and as a Leader. Protect, Guide, Serve and most importantly, FAMILY! Those 4 principles I live by help me do my job at my best!
What sets your business apart from others in your industry?
We are truly centered around COMMUNITY! Without a community, you have nothing! My family and I love Katy, TX!! My wife teaches here in the KATY I.S.D. We both serve in the community at our local church home, and I also serve the Katy community here by protecting what matters most to them with their insurance needs!
How has being a member of the Chamber of Commerce benefited your business?
Well... I am still new to the chamber..haha. Once I get settled in my new office here, I look to see how I can serve the other members alongside with the community! It doesn't necessarily have to be about insurance! If there is any way I can help someone in need, I will try to help them! I have had help all of my life getting to this point, so it's only fair that I do the same for others!
In what ways do you engage with the local community?
I give back to other small, big or mid size companies by engaging with staff, kids/teachers (If I am at a school event) Firefighters, Police officers, Nurses, Engineers and of course our Military!
What advice would you give to new business owners considering joining the Chamber?
Embrace people in the community, and be willing to help when called upon to help.
What challenges has your business faced and how have you overcome them?
Networking and marketing. I am still figuring out the overcoming part... haha
Can you tell us about a product or service you're particularly proud of?
Home/Renters and Life Insurance. Everyone should be thankful they have a roof over their heads, and Life Insurance is a gift to those that they truly love and want to protect!
What has been the most memorable customer interaction you’ve had?
Customers talking with me outside of insurance needs and us eventually praying on the phone with one another! That is more important to me. Doing right by people and just being there for them.
What’s the most rewarding part of running your business?
Seeing your team grow together and being excited about coming to work! Setting a culture at the office that breeds genuine connections to want to serve others!
How has your business changed your life personally?
I get to wear another hat while leading a team at the work place outside of leading my family of 4!
Who has been your biggest mentor or source of inspiration throughout your business journey?
John Chibroski, Don Hill, and my pastor Nathan Boldt!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received as a business owner?
