Member Spotlight: Rodney Warner, Connective Web Design

Can you tell us a little about the history of your business?

I founded Connective in 2010 in Boulder, Colorado. After working at another agency, I realized I wanted to create something different—an agency that didn’t just deliver great work but acted as a true partner to its clients. We started by helping small businesses and entrepreneurs establish trustworthy online presences. Over the years, as our reputation grew, so did our clientele. Today, we serve businesses of all sizes, offering branding, web design, and marketing services that drive real results.

What inspired you to start this business and how has your vision evolved over time?

I wanted to create a company where we could genuinely help businesses connect with their customers. The idea of creating something impactful and lasting was really exciting. Over time, my vision has evolved from focusing on individual projects to offering a full suite of services. I’ve always wanted us to be more than just an agency—we’re a partner that businesses can trust to grow with them.

What sets your business apart from others in your industry?

We’re what I like to call a “Non-Agency Agency.” We bring the high standards of a traditional agency, but without the bureaucracy. Our approach is personal and responsive, which allows us to pivot and adapt quickly to our clients’ needs. Plus, we focus on data-driven strategies paired with creative execution, ensuring that everything we do is both beautiful and effective.

How has being a member of the Chamber of Commerce benefited your business?

As someone relatively new to Katy, joining the Chamber has been instrumental in helping us understand the local business landscape. It’s given us a sense of belonging and a deeper connection to the community. Through the Chamber, we’ve had opportunities to learn about the unique challenges and strengths of businesses in the area, which has been invaluable as we continue to grow.

In what ways do you engage with the local community?

We’re proud to work with several local businesses, providing marketing and web design services that help them connect with their audiences. By collaborating with these businesses, we not only contribute to their success but also strengthen our ties to the Katy community.

What advice would you give to new business owners considering joining the Chamber?

Make the most of it! Pay attention to the Chamber’s emails and attend the events—they’re a great way to build relationships and learn from other business owners. The more you put into it, the more you’ll gain from the experience.

What do you believe has been the key to your business's success so far?

Our success comes from staying true to our core values: delivering exceptional work, being reliable, and genuinely caring about our clients’ success. It’s also about adaptability—we’re always looking for ways to improve and stay ahead in a constantly changing industry.

What challenges has your business faced and how have you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges has been keeping up with the rapid changes in technology and marketing trends. To overcome that, we’ve built a culture of continuous learning. Our team is always sharpening their skills and staying informed, which allows us to pivot quickly when needed.

Can you tell us about a product or service you're particularly proud of?

I’m incredibly proud of our web design services. A great website can completely transform a business, and I love seeing the impact our work has on our clients. It’s often the first step in building a long-term partnership with them.

How do you stay ahead in a competitive market?

We stay ahead by focusing on data and staying client-centered. It’s not just about being creative—it’s about making sure that creativity delivers measurable results. We’re also constantly refining our processes to ensure we’re efficient and effective.

What does excellent customer service mean to you?

To me, excellent customer service means being proactive, transparent, and truly invested in our clients’ success. It’s about going beyond just delivering a product and ensuring our clients feel supported and valued every step of the way.

What has been the most memorable customer interaction you’ve had?

One interaction that stands out is with a small business owner who was struggling to generate leads. After we redesigned their website and launched targeted marketing campaigns, they saw a huge increase in business. Seeing their excitement and hearing how much of a difference we made for them was incredibly rewarding.

What’s the most rewarding part of running your business?

The most rewarding part is seeing the impact we have on our clients. Helping them grow and succeed reminds me why I started Connective in the first place. It’s also deeply fulfilling to see how much our team has grown over the years.

How has your business changed your life personally?

Running Connective has taught me so much about leadership, resilience, and the power of collaboration. It’s given me a greater appreciation for the challenges and successes that come with growing a business, and it’s made me a better listener and problem solver.

Who has been your biggest mentor or source of inspiration throughout your business journey?

I’ve had several mentors along the way, but I’d say Seth Godin’s approach to branding and marketing has been a big influence. His emphasis on authenticity and creating meaningful connections really resonates with me.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received as a business owner?

"Always focus on providing value to your clients." It’s simple but powerful advice that has guided me throughout my career. When you focus on helping your clients succeed, everything else falls into place.
