About

Many Katy area people may know Herman Meyer only as the owner/operator of Meyer Foods. (Midway BBQ, Midway Meat Market, & Midway Deer Processing). ?When I came to katy,? Meyer says, ?the population was somewhere between 300 to 400. He?d learned the grocery business beginning as early as the fourth grade, when he started working at a local store owned by Bill Dube. He made $20 a month?big money for a kid in the 1940s. His graduating class from Katy HS was16 students in 1954. He went off to college at the University of Texas and earned a bachelor's degree in industrial management in 1958. Mr. Meyer fresh out college, young, and single, moved up to top of the draft boards. He volunteered to join the Army in 1958 and spent two years in active duty in Fort Knox, KY. Midway Market beginnings actually started back 1961, when Meyer was discharged from the amry, he began working at Dubes Grocery in Katy. After 4 years Meyer thinks, why not make the money for myself and become his own store-keeper. The chance to go into business came in 1967, when he opened his store at the present location 5901 Highway Blvd, with his father's help. The meat department was one of his favorite parts of the store, and his love for wild game hunting led him to wild game processing. In 1970, our first year in that business, we did 125 animals. By the early 2000s the number had grown to several thousand. ''We accept elk, caribou, mule deer year-round, but our primary business is white tail deer. Midway BBQ started off as a shack on the side of the legendary grocery store in 90s.
